Footprint Namibia Handbook : The Travel Guide
Published in Paperback by Footprint (August, 1999)
Author: Sebastian Ballard
Average review score:

Fabulous country, great guidebook
I usually buy Lonely Planet guides but have been getting bored with their formulaic structure so I thought I'd give Footprint a try. On the whole, I thought the guide was quite well-written. I also liked the organization of the book (better than Lonely Planet) -- beginning with a brief overview of the regions, highlights and possible itineraries, following with essential information and regional listings and ending with the background info (history, culture, wildlife) that you can read after the rush to organize a trip or while you're on the road.

The information is ample, there are many maps throughout with impressive amounts of detail, and it's a reasonable size and is durable and well-bound. The only drawback is the limited number of photos... but Namibia is so gorgeous, you'll have plenty of your own!

Extremely useful guide to tour this magnificient country wit
The Namibia handbook is a very useful, up-to-date travelguide, giving you all the necessary information. The size is ideal for backpackers and the hardback prevents the book from damaging. All hotels, restaurants, camp-sites, safari-companies etc. are mentioned, together with their telephone-numbers and if available, a short description based on travel experiences by earlier readers of the book.

Lonely Planet Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia
Published in Paperback by Lonely Planet (February, 1992)
Authors: Deanna Swaney and Myra Shackley
Average review score:

Book good. Some info outdated
Worst place I ever went to was Heaven Lodge in Chimanimana. Abysmal experience - how on earth can you recoment it. fantastically impressed with the bushwalking company. Give them a plug, they deserve it. Chimanimani Bushwalking Co. The only reason to go there

You Just Can't Get Lost With This One...
Swaney's guide to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is the best on the bookstore shelf. The level of detail is superb, from major cities to rural villages. She should consider herself more a regional geographer, as her detail concerning things like history, climate, people, and place are akin to that of one! All this and she manages to fit in the best deals on lodging, food, and travel sites, not to mention important info concerning safety and hazards associated with travel. I used this book extensively during my travels throughout last year, when I lived in Windhoek. Indeed, you can find no better than this- and the information is as good or better than what the locals give! I once had the opportunity to meet her at a hostel in Windhoek, when I was doing some academic research there, and never had the chance to tell her how much I praise this guide!

Battlefront Namibia
Published in Paperback by Lawrence Hill & Co (December, 1981)
Authors: John Ya-Otto, Ole Gjerstad, and Michael Mercer
Average review score:

Compelling and readable
This book offers a good description of the preceedings leading to Namibia's independence. It highlights the obstacles faced in the establishment and effectiveness of the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) from the point of view of one of its most influential members, John Ya-Otto. The writing style is compelling, so even though it is a detailed historical account, it is very readable.

Beneath the Visiting Moon: Images of Combat in Southern Africa (Issues in Low-Intensity Conflict Series)
Published in Hardcover by Lexington Books (October, 1990)
Author: Jim Hooper
Average review score:

Well worth the hunt!
I found this book many moons ago in a used book rack. Having recently re-read the volume I am again impressed by seeing a view of South Africa's efforts to halt communism in SW Africa/Namibia. Now that apartheid has ended officially, we the rest of the world can see the other side of life in the southern tip of Africa. Mr. Hooper's description of his time with Koevoet is both exciting and in-depth in his examination of the people conducting counter-insurgency against the communist supported SWAPO. A good, fast read that can allow the reader a chance to expand their knowledge of what attrocities were committed by forces in the name of "global marxism." Balance this work with recently released histories on American work against communism. You the reader can now decide with a more balanced view. Not just a war history but a look at why men fight for seemingly unjust causes.

Seminal reading about the SADF's Involvement in Angola
This book by Capt Willem Steenkamp is an excellent way to begin the journey of discovery about the SADF's involvement in Angola. Not only is Capt Steenkamp a journalist, but he is a member of the Cape Town Highlanders and "He was there" as a serving soldier. Excellent book! Buy it !

The Bushman Myth: The Making of a Namibian Underclass (Conflict & Social Change)

great discusion of the image and self.
Robert gordons book shows how people in love with the idea of how the bushmen should behave really have no idea of how they actually behave.

Cadogan Zimbabwe, Botswana & Namibia

Good Book!
I haven't been to africa yet, so take this review with a grain of salt. I got it from the library and have found it to be quite informative. I also really enjoy the stories and fables in it. There is a watercolor guide to the animals you are likely (and not so likely) to see. Generally, my impression is that it is well written, though, perhaps written for someone with a larger budget than myself. I have yet to see if the info is up to date. Get this book. It has a lot to offer.

Changing the History of Africa: Angola and Namibia
Published in Paperback by Ocean Press (March, 1991)
Authors: David Deutschmann and Gabriel Garcia Mrquez
Average review score:

Good book for perspective, some flaws in the facts

This book contains a selection of essays from various role-players in the Angolan/South African conflict, including the famous essay by Nobel Prize-winner, Gabriel Garcia Marquez "Operation Carlota", and a few of "Fidel Castro's" speeches.

While a lot of this is propaganda, it at least gives an impression of the war from the Cuban and Angolan perspective.

This book needs to be read in conjunction with one of the books written from the South African perpective, such as the one by Fred Bridgland "The War for Africa" and others, and you need to draw your own conclusions.

The human suffering that this war generated, is still a legacy of the Southern African Continent, with the issue of the remaining landmines bringing this issue to the attention of the media once again, particularly with the visit of Lady Diana just recently.

For anyone who wishes to gain a balanced view of the progress of the war, as well as some of it's roots, this book is one of the key elements to garnering that information.

Discover Namibia
Published in Unknown Binding by C. Struik ()
Author: Michael Brittan
Average review score:

So beautifully written.
One needs to be a great writer to describe a country in such an elegant way. Also a master observer and naturalist to be at the same time extremely accurate and rich in detail withouth getting the reader tired while cruising through hundreds of pages. I certainly recommend this book to anyone interested in what I call "the strangest and most exotic place on Earth".

Etosha: A Visual Souvenir

Excellent Photography!
The book contains beautiful photographs of this 15,000 square mile, national park in northern Namibia. From the ponderous elephants to the mighty cats and the statuesque giraffe, Etosha's rich and varied wildlife are captured in the many landscapes that characterize the park. An excellent memory book of a fabulous trip. Or, an intriguing way to peak your interest in going.
